 What do you understand by Referencing?

 We cannot merely depend on one author's thoughts and experience while writing academically. We draw on the concepts and analysis found in other works, including books, journal papers, websites, etc. These additional sources might be utilised to examine and analyze our views in an academic article while also supporting them.

 Here's where reference is useful. When concepts from external sources have been incorporated into academic writing, the reader is informed. Referencing is acknowledging the original source or sources while using someone else works. 

It is critical to make it obvious which ideas are your own as well as which ideas or work belonged to another person or source when you construct your own theories and arguments and draw on the work of others to support or refute your viewpoints. You should always give credit to the person or organisation who came up with any ideas or effort that was not entirely your own. In order to avoid plagiarism, this must be done.

Referencing is the proper recognition of the following in academic writing:

  • Work and ideas that come from someone else
  • Information from another source that you have included in your work (which is not widely accepted)

Why referencing is important?

Referencing serves other crucial purposes in addition to preventing plagiarism.

  • First of all, reference enables us to recognise the input of other authors and scholars into our work. Any academic article that references the thoughts, words, or research of another author must include citations.
  • Second, referring is a means of acknowledging authors from whom we have taken words and concepts. By mentioning a specific researcher's work, we show our acquiescence to and respect for their right to intellectual property.

Elements of Referencing.

Referencing has two elements.

  1. - A citation within the assignment's text, sometimes referred to as an in-text citation.
  2. - A reference entry in the assignment's reference list

Within the paragraph, in-text citations are utilised.They are given right away after a declaration has been made and they identify the source of the information.In contrast, a reference list is supplied at the conclusion of the text.It lists all the references that were utilised to create the academic article.

In general, it is not necessary to mention facts or common knowledge that are generally known and may be found in several places. For instance, well-known historical dates, undisputed facts, or ideas that form the basis of a discipline, such as basic physics equations. Different styles of referencing

Today, we'll talk about three different reference types. 

  • APA style

The author's last name and the year of publication are included in the body of the document when using the author/date form of citation in APA style. Many social sciences employ this method, which is advised by the American Psychological Association. The most recent edition is the 7th edition of the APA Manual, which was released in October 2019. However, many academic institutions and publications continue to utilise the 6th edition, which was released in 2009.

  • Harvard-style 

The Harvard-style reference uses the same author/date format as APA referencing.   • Australian Guide to Legal Citation (AGLC)

The most recent version of AGLC, which was released in 2018, is the fourth edition.
